On the Thursday before the "No Kings" rally at the State Capitol in St. Paul, I realized that I had misplaced the newer Neewer wireless microphone transmitter—specifically, the USB-C receiver component that plugs directly into my phone. Because I needed an immediate hybrid wireless microphone solution that would work with both my cell phone and my Canon EOS R6 Mark II camera, I began an extensive search upon returning home that evening. My research continued well into Friday morning as I checked general search engines, YouTube, major electronics and photography retailers—including B&H, Adorama, Sweetwater, and Best Buy—as well as Amazon, eBay, and even RØDE’s official website. During these searches, I repeatedly encountered the RØDE Wireless Micro smartphone version, which retailed for a little over $100. However, the dual-purpose RØDE Wireless Micro Camera Kit—which includes a dedicated camera receiver designed to mount in a camera hot shoe in addition to the mobile transmitters—did not appear anywhere in my search results. As a result, late Friday evening, I went to the Best Buy store in Roseville, Minnesota, and purchased the smartphone version with the practical intention of using it for my project and returning it afterward.

While I was at the Best Buy store, I had an interaction with a male employee that I personally interpreted as flirtatious or as being hit on. The interaction stood out to me and contributed to my overall sense of discomfort regarding the circumstances I was already experiencing at the time. Whether intentional or not, the encounter remained memorable to me and became part of the broader pattern of events that I associated with my concerns.

Yesterday, while browsing YouTube, I unexpectedly came across a review of the Wireless Micro Camera Kit. After clicking on the video, numerous additional reviews and recommendations featuring the camera edition suddenly appeared beneath it. This immediately caught my attention because the camera version contains the same microphones as the smartphone edition but also includes a dedicated receiver featuring a 1.1-inch AMOLED display and a 3.5mm TRS output, making it compatible with digital cameras, DSLRs, and mirrorless cameras while still maintaining USB-C mobile connectivity. The fact that this version had not appeared during my extensive searches in April raised concerns for me and prompted questions about why it had seemingly become so visible only now.

Upon discovering the camera version, I experienced sudden intrusive thoughts suggesting that I should purchase the newer kit and give my current smartphone version to one of my roommates, the one from Sierra Leone. What made these thoughts particularly jarring was that I do not normally think about or interact with my roommates in that manner, nor had I been considering giving away my equipment. Because of this, the thoughts felt abrupt, unprompted, and disconnected from my normal patterns of thinking.

I also experience recurring and highly distressing intrusive thoughts related to my sexuality and my roommates, particularly the one roommate from Sierra Leone. These thoughts often feel aggressive, unwanted, and inconsistent with my own beliefs, values, and sense of identity. As a heterosexual male, I do not identify with these thoughts or desires, and I reject them as representations of who I am. Because of the intensity and persistence of these experiences, I perceive them as attempts to influence or manipulate my thinking and decision-making.

I have written extensively about what I perceive to be an insidious effort to undermine my autonomy and challenge my sexual identity. In my view, this involves a small network of influential individuals within certain homosexual communities, including people whom I believe have connections to government, military, intelligence, and corporate institutions. I believe that these individuals are engaged in a coordinated effort to test whether heterosexual individuals can be influenced or pressured into adopting homosexual or bisexual behaviors and identities. From my perspective, these activities represent an attempt to subvert personal sovereignty, manipulate individual decision-making, and interfere with the fundamental right of individuals to define their own identity and orientation free from coercion.

Regardless of their source, I view these intrusive experiences as violations of my personal boundaries and autonomy. I remain committed to maintaining my independence, preserving my identity, and making my own decisions based on my genuine beliefs and preferences rather than on thoughts or pressures that feel foreign, unwanted, or coercive.

I interpret these experiences not as random coincidences or technical anomalies, but as evidence of what I believe to be a deliberate and non-consensual system of surveillance, behavioral influence, and coercive experimentation utilizing advanced technologies and tactics. In my assessment, these activities constitute a modernized version of the behavior-modification techniques historically associated with the CIA's MK Ultra program—an updated and technologically enhanced continuation of efforts to influence thoughts, behaviors, beliefs, and personal identity through covert psychological manipulation, surveillance, and coercive methods. From my perspective, the objective remains fundamentally the same: to override individual autonomy, shape human behavior without informed consent, and exert control while maintaining plausible deniability. I believe the purpose of such methods is to influence, manage, exploit, and pressure individuals into actions they would not otherwise choose, while obscuring the source of that influence and denying its existence. I regard these perceived influences as direct challenges to my personal sovereignty, autonomy, and identity. The added intrusive thoughts of “Welcome to the Family” is one of coercive recruitment, for what purposes, I know from history, to be diabolical. As a heterosexual male, I firmly reject what I perceive as intrusive external pressures and attempts to manipulate my thoughts, decisions, beliefs, relationships, or sexual orientation. I consider such influences to be violations of my personal boundaries and fundamental rights as an individual, and I remain committed to defending my independence, preserving my identity, and resisting any form of coercion that seeks to undermine my sense of self, autonomy, free will, or personal sovereignty.

*Side note: after writing and posting this, I went into the kitchen to get a spoon. When I opened the dishwasher, I noticed a lingering smell—something like cologne. What struck me as strange is that inhaling it had an unexpected effect: instead of just being a familiar scent, it felt as though I had just used an asthma inhaler. My chest suddenly felt open, and I experienced a tingling sensation in my brain.

From since I and I was a likkle yute, music has always played a major role in my life. My eldest brother, Natty, used to work on cruise ships and would be gone for weeks and months. We would watch the ships leaving the island as the sun shone on the water, creating a blinding streak of light. My eyes squinted, trying to keep the vessel in focus as it headed toward the horizon and disappeared beyond it.

He would leave us with strict instructions not to interfere with his record player. But when he was home, Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, Jacob Miller and Bunny Wailer, alongside Calypso Rose, The Mighty Sparrow, and Lord Kitchener created a constant movement of sweet Caribbean sounds. Reggae and Calypso music became instrumental in my musical education.

Natty, along with my other two brothers, played steel pan for different steel bands in the town of Saint George's on the island of Grenada, West Indies. My twin brother Nigel, my nephews Oral, Nkem, and Jim, and I would go and hang out at the pan yard. It was located right next to Cemetery Hill, a massive cemetery that climbed up a steep incline, the silent white headstones overlooking the explosive energy of our rehearsals.

We never learned how to play the steel pan ourselves back then. Perhaps they thought we were too young and small to see over and into the instrument to find where the notes lived. To a small child, looking into the belly of a pan was like looking into a metallic labyrinth. Unlike a piano, where notes ascend in a simple, predictable left-to-right row, the tenor pan is a chromatic spiderweb based on the circle of fifths. Notes are intentionally placed across from one another to prevent cross-talk—the sympathetic vibrations that happen when adjacent notes bleed into each other. To find a simple C-major scale, a player has to skip around the circle, striking notes that face each other, dancing across the metal. Many notes have two or three octaves stacked directly inward, pulling your hands toward the deep center of the bowl.

Standing on our tiptoes, we couldn’t see that geometry. We just heard the sweet sounds of panga-langa panga-langa. The music made us tap our feet's, jump and wave and whine up. We didn't know yet that we were looking at the only major acoustic musical instrument invented in the twentieth century.

The pan was born way before our time, born out of cultural resistance and pure resourcefulness in our twin-island neighbor, Trinidad and Tobago. Our ancestors brought "talking drums" from Africa for ceremonies and communication, but after emancipation in 1834, the colonial British authorities grew terrified that freed people would use the rhythms to organize revolts. In 1884, they banned all traditional hand drums.

But you cannot kill the rhythm of the islands. Pushed into a corner, musicians in the 1930s turned to tamboo bamboo—stomping hollow bamboo sticks against the ground and striking them together to produce deep, percussive thumps. When the authorities outlawed bamboo too, claiming the sticks were being used as weapons in street gang violence, the people looked to the garbage. They began banging on everyday metal objects: dustbin lids, paint cans, biscuit tins, and old car parts, noticing that hammering the metal into raised and lowered dents produced distinct pitches.

The real revolution came during World War II. The presence of U.S. military bases and expanding oil refineries in Trinidad left behind a massive surplus of empty, 55-gallon industrial oil drums. Pioneers like Winston "Spree" Simon and Ellie Mannette looked at those discarded trash barrels and saw symphonies. Mannette figured out how to sink the tough drumhead into a concave shape and tune it to chromatic pitches, while Spree Simon created the first recognizable 14-note melodic pan. They hammered resistance, survival, and celebration right into the steel.

In the shadows of Cemetery Hill, watching my brothers' hands fly across those tuned oil barrels, I was soaking in that history without even realizing it. The pan yard was a living classroom, teaching me that music wasn't just something you listened to—it was something you claimed, defended, and built from the ground up.

Every year for as far back as I can remember, that pan yard energy built toward one thing: Carnival. It was the absolute peak of the year, a magnetic force we anticipated with a fierce, counting-down-the-days kind of hunger.

As soon as school let out for summer break, the island became our kingdom. My siblings and I filled the endless, sun-drenched weeks with a specific summer ritual. We spent our mornings making, selling, and flying kites—running up the hills to catch the wind, engaging in fierce, tactical kite battles that left the sky scarred with broken string. We spent long days losing track of time trekking to Grand Anse beach. We were naughty kids, watching the girls in their bathing suits trying to catch the older boys' attention. I was not shy; I'd make my way over to a few and sweet-talk them, but they'd shoo me away, kindly saying, “Eh eh, look at this saga boy. He cute, but we like older boys. If we meet again when you're older, and if you remember my name, who knows, eh?” I’d get a kiss on my cheek, right on the dimple. The fellas would give high-fives and I'd say she's my girlfriend, even though she wasn't. When we were not on the beach or our routine outings, Mom would always carve out a special week of every summer month for us to stay with our grandparents. Moving between our maternal and paternal homes, we were soaked in family stories, heavy plates of food, and sleeping outside under the moonlight and shining stars.

When we weren't buried in books, we were galavanting around town with restless energy. We would march down to Queens Park to press against the fences for soccer matches, or crowd into the grounds for local concerts, festive events, and traveling fairs. We made treks to the zoo and spent hours at the Tanteen playing field, a playground alive with the squeak of swings, the tilt of seesaws, and the dizzying spin of merry-go-rounds.

Our adventures frequently took us to the Botanical Gardens, a place that felt like a step into a wilder world. Lush, bursting with heavy fruit trees, and situated right next to the government's forestry division, the gardens were the playground of the Mona monkeys. They roamed completely free among the visitors, completely unbothered by human presence. Like the ancestors of the steel pan, these clever monkeys had been introduced to Grenada from West Africa back in the eighteenth century, adapting perfectly to the Caribbean soil. They knew exactly how lush the property was, and they would boldly hang around the pathways, using their charm to hustle snacks from passing visitors.

In the summer, the island felt more alive than any other time of year. Visitors flocked from all over the globe, the blue waters filling with sails for the yacht club regatta races, while swimming competitions pushed athletes around the coast. But no matter where the sun took us during the day, when late evening reached, the gravity of the music pulled us right back. We’d find ourselves resting in the dirt of the pan yard, watching our family members hone their steel pan skills, mastering complex arrangements and musical compositions with an ease that looked like magic.

Right next to almost every steel band on the island was a Mas camp. There, costume designers and makers worked in perfect sync, their hands flying through feathers, wire, and cloth to create beautiful, lavish costumes and towering floats for the road march competitions.

But while the crowds loved the bright, pretty mas, I was drawn to something much darker, heavier, and completely uncompromising. Me? I love the Jab Jab ting, eh. Schuupes. When I say Jab Jab was the ting I liked, you have to understand I had a real rebellious spirit, eh.

The history of the Grenadian Jab Jab is fundamentally rooted in anti-colonial rebellion, psychological warfare, and the fierce reclamation of Black identity following the emancipation of enslaved Africans. Far from being a modern party costume or some demonic ritual, the Jab Jab is a profound act of street theater dating back to the nineteenth century.

The term itself comes from the French patois diable, meaning devil. Under colonial rule, European masters and missionaries routinely demonized African cultural traditions, spiritual practices, and Black skin itself. When emancipation finally came in 1834, the newly freed people took that racist rhetoric and turned it into a razor-sharp weapon of satire. Their attitude was beautifully defiant: "You call me a Black devil? Fine. I will show you the ultimate devil."

When the Jab Jab take to the streets during the early, pitch-black, pre-dawn hours of J'Ouvert Monday to open Spicemas, every single visual element is a living historical reference to the horrors and survival of the plantation era. Originally, masqueraders used molasses, charcoal dust, or raw tar from the sugar estates to coat their entire bodies. By my time, we used stale motor oil, painting ourselves until we shone like midnight. This blackening was both a mask for anonymity and a proud, amplified celebration of beautiful, unified Blackness.

On our heads, we wore helmets affixed with protruding cow or bull horns, deliberately parodying the Christian "devil" imagery enforced by our former oppressors and weaponizing it as an ancient form of rebellion. We painted our mouths blood-red, a visual tied deeply to West African warrior folklore, mimicking traditions like those of the Mursi people who painted their faces before going into battle.

As we marched, we dragged heavy steel chains and padlocks down the asphalt. In the past, those links were the literal tools of our physical captivity; dragging them through the modern streets became a symbolic act of breaking out of oppression, shedding the historical burdens of our ancestors.

The Jab Jab procession isn't chaos—it is a deeply organized, hypnotic collective. Led by commanders known as Capitals, who direct the throngs using sharp, piercing call-and-response chants called "spellings," the mass moves forward as a unified wall of sound. There are no sweet melodies here. The rhythm is driven by a steady battery of bass, coupé, and cutter drums, punctuated by the haunting, primal roar of blowing conch shells—the exact sound historically used to signal slave revolts across the Caribbean.

Other islands have their variations, like the Jab Molassie, but Grenada is globally recognized as the spiritual home where this massive, uncompromising Jab Jab culture was born and fiercely preserved. It is a living lineage that shifts the definition of "the devil" off the masquerader and casts it right back onto the oppressive systems of history.

Covered in black oil, the heavy steel chains rattling against the ground, and the conch shells screaming into the early morning air, that rebellious spirit inside me found its home. I wasn't just a boy playing a character in the street. I was stepping into a long line of selectors, warriors, and rebels who knew how to take the heavy, discarded pieces of history and make them shake the earth.

Because performance is big in dancehall culture, and your presence as a selector is much more than just a person spinning records. It involves theatre, deep theatrics; it is a live monologue play. You speak directly to the audience and directly to your opponents. When you introduce a song or a heavy dub plate special, you aren't just dropping a needle—you are telling the story behind it, commanding the room and drawing every soul into your circle.

It is a war of music. You kill your opponents by selecting the absolute best songs to trigger the loudest, most primal reactions: screams, whistle blowing, hand horns, and thunderous shouts of forward, more fiyah, and booyakah booyakah! You get the crowd so hype, so completely intoxicated on the rhythm, that they invest their entire attention into you. They forget you even have opponents on the stage. In fact, by the time you're through with them, they don't even want to hear the other side, and loud, jarring boos fill the dancehall the second your rival tries to speak.

That was the power I wanted. That was the theater I was preparing for. From the strict rules of Natty's record player, to the hidden geometry of the pan yard, to the motor-oil defiance of the Jab Jab, everything had been leading to this.

The year was 1991. The dancehall was packed, the air was thick with smoke and anticipation, and it was time for the rise of the #1 Selector.

The decree, “Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword” (Matthew 26:52), is commonly presented by mainstream theological institutions as a timeless principle of divine justice, nonviolence, and moral reciprocity. It is frequently interpreted as a warning against aggression and a call toward spiritual peace. Yet when this statement is examined within the political and historical realities of the first century, a profound contradiction emerges.

The Roman Empire—the dominant power under which the New Testament narratives were written, preserved, and disseminated—was itself a civilization built upon military conquest. Rome expanded, governed, and extracted wealth through the continuous application of armed force. Its authority rested not upon philosophical persuasion or voluntary consent, but upon the disciplined violence of its legions. Against this backdrop, the command that individuals should reject the sword appears less as a universal moral principle and more as a highly selective doctrine whose practical effects benefited imperial power.

The Asymmetry of the Mandate

The fundamental paradox lies in the unequal application of the principle. The command is directed toward ordinary individuals, particularly the powerless and oppressed, while the institutions that monopolize violence remain exempt from its moral consequences.

The dynamic can be summarized as follows:

Rather than approving this instinctive defense against tyranny, the Savior character rebukes him with the now-famous declaration: “All who take the sword will perish by the sword.”

The implication is that even when confronted by blatant injustice or imminent oppression, the faithful must never meet physical force with force.

Meanwhile, the Roman state continued to employ violence on an enormous scale. Crucifixions, military occupations, punitive campaigns, and systemic economic extraction were accepted as legitimate expressions of imperial authority. Violence exercised by the empire became “order,” while violence exercised against the empire became “criminality.” The same instrument—the sword—was assigned radically different moral meanings depending entirely upon who wielded it.

The Exploitation of the Fear of Death

At the heart of this doctrine lies a powerful psychological mechanism: the exploitation of humanity’s hardwired fear of violent death.

Throughout history, populations subjected to prolonged oppression have often resisted through whatever physical means were available to them. In the first century, the sword represented far more than a weapon; it represented agency, self-defense, and the tangible possibility of geopolitical liberation. Groups such as the Sicarii and Zealots viewed armed resistance as the only realistic, rational response to an extractive imperial occupation.

The statement “those who live by the sword shall die by the sword” functions as a highly effective form of psychological deterrence. It transforms resistance into absolute futility by suggesting that defensive violence inevitably leads to total destruction. The sword ceases to be a potential tool of liberation and is re-coded as a symbol of guaranteed failure.

This mechanism operates on three distinct levels of behavioral conditioning:

1. The Prophecy of Failure

The doctrine implies that armed resistance is doomed from the outset. Those considering rebellion are taught not merely that they may fail, but that failure is embedded within the very moral structure of reality itself. The result is a profound, internalized resignation.

2. The Pacifist Enclosure

The oppressed individual is further encouraged to view physical resistance as morally corrupting. By taking up the sword, one supposedly becomes indistinguishable from the oppressor. Earthly struggles are therefore subordinated to absolute mandates of spiritual purity and future redemption.

3. The Redirection of Hope

Instead of pursuing tangible political liberation or land retention, believers are encouraged to invest their imagination in an invisible kingdom entirely detached from the material world. The focus shifts from transforming present conditions to enduring them faithfully.

Through these rhetorical mechanisms, the natural impulse toward self-preservation is systematically redirected away from physical action and toward silent spiritual endurance.

The Fiction of Divine Kinship as a Psychological Harmonizer

To solidify this behavioral conditioning and insulate the ruling class from the fury of the exploited, the imperial narrative introduced an extraordinary social harmonizer: the concept that master and servant, Roman oppressor and provincial subject, were now equal “brothers and sisters in Christ.”

By creating a transcendent, spiritual kinship that superseded all real-world material divisions, the elite architects executed a profound psychological realignment.

THE REVERSION OF CLASS FRICTION

Instead of recognizing the Roman state as their true material predator, the populace was trained to direct their collective anxiety toward a cosmic scapegoat: the character of Satan, depicted as a manipulative, slithery-tongued serpent.

By framing the primary human struggle as an internal, moral war against an unseen demonic adversary rather than an external struggle against a tax-extracting empire, the oligarchy achieved an ultimate coup of containment. The peasant came to believe that they shared the exact same vulnerabilities and spiritual objectives as the elites who ruled them. Horizontal dissent was effectively criminalized; anyone attempting to expose the ongoing material plundering of the province was no longer seen as a champion of the poor, but as an agent of the Serpent trying to fracture the divine family.

The Preservation of the Extractive State

From a sociopolitical perspective, such doctrines serve as remarkably effective instruments of permanent social stability.

A physical fortress can be breached by determined opponents. Armies can be defeated. Occupations can be resisted. However, a population convinced that resistance itself is an affront to God becomes infinitely easier to govern and milk for revenue.

The genius of such a system lies in its total structural invisibility. The sword need not be physically removed from the hands of the people if they can be persuaded through sacred literature to abandon it voluntarily. Once resistance becomes synonymous with spiritual peril, the mechanisms of control become fully internalized.

The result is a society in which subjects endure systemic exploitation while interpreting their endurance as a supreme virtue. Suffering becomes sanctified. Submission becomes righteousness. Resistance becomes sin.

The empire’s security no longer depends solely upon the expensive deployment of military force; it is reinforced and maintained by the voluntary beliefs of those it governs.

This paradox becomes even more pronounced when passages such as Luke 19:27 are considered. In the Parable of the Ten Minas, the nobleman—explicitly presented by orthodox interpretation as an allegory for Christ returning to claim his kingdom—issues a stark, unyielding administrative command:

“But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.”

This passage introduces a chilling tension that exposes the true colors of the narrative architecture. While ordinary believers are instructed to reject the sword, turn the other cheek, and embrace total nonviolence in the material world, divine or kingly authority retains the absolute right to employ lethal, retaliatory judgment. The renunciation of violence is therefore not universal; rather, violence remains completely legitimate when exercised by the highest authority of the estate.

The narrative architects utilized this device of deferred vengeance with immense strategic utility. By separating the Savior’s identity into a gentle, self-sacrificing servant in the present era and an unyielding, slaughtering executioner in the next, they constructed a perfect psychological pincer movement. The common people were trained to love the character for his immediate meekness, while harboring a deep, subconscious terror of the absolute violence he promised to unleash upon anyone who refused to bow to his authority.

If violence is inherently corrupting, why does legitimate authority retain the right to use it? If the sword is morally condemned, why does it reappear so brutally in the hands of rulers, judges, kings, and divine figures throughout scripture? The answer is clear: the sword is only condemned when it is found in the hands of the subjugated.

Conclusion

The phrase “those who live by the sword shall die by the sword” has traditionally been understood as a universal moral truth. Yet viewed through the lens of history, classical rhetoric, and dynastic power, it can also be interpreted as a sophisticated doctrine designed to disproportionately restrain the powerless while leaving the established oligarchy entirely untouched.

In this reading, the statement functions not merely as a warning against violence, but as an exquisite mechanism of social control. By linking physical resistance with inevitable destruction and eternal spiritual peril, it transforms the natural fear of death into a force of permanent political compliance. The sword becomes morally forbidden to the oppressed even as it remains the primary, unquestioned tool of the institutions that govern them.

The tension remains impossible to ignore: a world in which empires rule by the sword while subjects are taught that taking up the sword is a path to spiritual ruin presents a masterful, historic paradox at the absolute heart of power, morality, and human freedom.

Afterword: On the Necessity of This Inquiry

This inquiry is born not out of a desire to engage in passive theological debate, but from a necessity to unmask the hidden architecture of human subjugation. For centuries, mainstream institutions have treated the evolution of Western orthodoxy as an organic, purely moral triumph of spiritual philosophy. Though initially reported to the leasing office through an informal conversational channel, this sensitive disclosure was immediately subverted by an institutional breakdown. Instead of maintaining professional administrative discretion, staff members within the front office transformed the report into localized gossip, openly mocking and laughing at Jaren when he next crossed their threshold.

This corporate incompetence directly catalyzed a toxic shift in the apartment's ecosystem. Incapable of challenging the institutional hierarchy that had humiliated him, and citing a profound cultural aversion to public mockery, the offender redirected 100% of his psychological resentment onto the resident who reported the boundary breach. In response to this friction, I actively sought to de-escalate the environment, explicitly advising the offender against moving out and making it absolutely clear that I never intended for the front office to breach confidentiality or inflict personal embarrassment.

Rather than matching this restorative stance, the offender chose a cheaper tactical alignment with management. His manufactured grievance and performance of emotional distress laid the groundwork for the events of May, wherein a routine, evidentiary inquiry into stolen property was seamlessly laundered by General Manager Jacob Belsinger into a false administrative charge of 'harassment'. The institution actively manufactured a hostile environment through its own loose lips, and then insulated itself from liability by threatening the housing security of the sovereign individual demanding basic civil boundaries.

The Lexical Manipulation of Administrative Authority

The clinical mechanics of institutional gaslighting require the deliberate inflation of language to convert a victim's pursuit of accountability into an administrative violation. This structural distortion manifested clearly during my face-to-face confrontation with General Manager Jacob Belsinger regarding the language used in his baseless accusations of "harassing, bullying, and threatening behavior."

I directly challenged his terminology, pointing out that knocking on a co-tenant's door after 11:00 PM to inquire about my missing property did not structurally meet any objective definition of a threat, harassment, or bullying. I pushed past his corporate framing and held up an accurate behavioral mirror, stating that a late-night knock was, at very most, a nuisance.

Incapable of defending his linguistic inflation under cross-examination, Belsinger demanded:

"What is it then?"

By stubborn adherence to an emailed script, the institution attempts to establish a absurd domestic hierarchy: a thief's right to uninterrupted sleep inside a room containing stolen property is treated as an absolute right, while a sovereign individual's late-night vocalization and knock to retrieve his own physical belongings is branded an act of aggression. They must maintain this linguistic inflation; to admit the action was merely a localized nuisance would force the institution to address the actual material facts of the case, the roommate's active theft, deception, and systemic boundary violations.

The Repeating Loop of the Corporate Hustle

This entire bureaucratic routine is a script I have encountered before. Rather than penalizing the individuals who leave the apartment perimeter unlocked and breach my private room, the management team wants to test my boundaries. They want to see if they can extract financial capital out of an unresolved safety crisis, or at the very least, pressure me into doing the heavy logistical lifting of a move to save them the trouble of enforcing their own lease.

This is the ultimate manifestation of "soft" subjugation, a systematic attempt to weary the psychology until an individual quietly accepts a lower standard of respect, safety, and truth. They want me to believe that I am the one being difficult because I refuse to allow my property to be smuggled into private rooms, my home's perimeter to be left unlocked, or my name to be erased.

But the evidence remains absolute. The photos of the empty kitchen do not lie. The subsequent picture of the smuggled spoons missing then resting in the dishwasher six hours later does not lie. The roommate's defensive confession is a matter of factual record.

I am leaving this environment in August. I did not enter this space to be disrespected, psychologically harassed, or subjected to insidious, false corporate accusations. Until my departure, I am locking down my physical belongings. My new utensils will reside exclusively within my private space, completely removed from their ecosystem of carelessness. I will no longer waste my intellect or my energy trying to educate individuals who choose to be blind, or arguing with a management structure that uses gaslighting as an operational policy. I hold my rights as a leaseholder, and I will maintain the integrity of my Fortress Mindset until the final day of this contract.

Biological Carelessness and the Weaponization of Vulnerability

While the roommate maintained the performative theater of wearing a mask in the public corridors of the building, he would routinely remove it the moment he crossed the apartment threshold. More egregiously, while I was seated at the kitchen counter eating, he would repeatedly enter the common space and cough directly into the open air without covering his mouth or nose.

When I pleaded with him to seek medical evaluation at an emergency room, he deflected accountability by citing a lack of health insurance. I provided direct, objective data, explaining that under federal law, emergency rooms are legally mandated to screen and stabilize patients regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. He rejected this factual guidance, choosing instead to vacate the premises for forty-eight hours to reside at his sister’s home. The Taste of Someone Else’s Death

It started on a MacBook screen, a disembodied fracture breaking into the mundane rhythm of a social media feed. Then, the video looped. I sat in my living room in my Charlotte, North Carolina apartment, gripped by an absolute, paralyzed shock as the life was slowly, systematically pressed out of a man. I watched a Minneapolis Police Department officer’s knee. I heard a man gasping, pleading, calling out for his mother. I saw the internal hemorrhaging, the blood running out of his nose, and then the exact, terrifying moment his body went entirely still while bystanders cried out, begging for the other officers to do something, to get their fellow officer’s knee off of George Floyd’s neck. Bystanders were screaming, “Please, someone, just check his pulse.”

My eyes swelled. The tears came hot and fast, and when they hit my lips, I tasted the bitter, heavy salt of my own anger and hurt. I remember thinking: So this is what someone else’s death tastes like. Tears can be a lot of things. They can be joy, laughter, or excitement. But these were the tears of a profound, fracturing disappointment. A line had been crossed, and I knew right then I wasn’t going to sit idle. I wasn’t going to watch history from the sidelines. I was going to fight back.

I took my camera out every single day. I sought out the protests, moving through small gatherings that swelled into massive, dense occupations of the concrete streets. In Charlotte, the camera wasn’t just a creative outlet; it was an instrument of raw adrenaline and active resistance.

I photographed the pain. The despair. The exact expression of being sick and tired of being sick and tired. I captured the energy of the ‘I wanna tear this damn city up.’ The frames from those nights were wide, frantic, and filled with a volatile friction. I captured the stark geometry of the movement: the silhouette of a raised fist cutting through the blinding glare of police headlights, the reflection of a protest sign mirrored in the glossy, metallic hood of a car, the sheer mass of humanity packed tightly between building walls.

To see young people, even babies in strollers, with their small fists raised in solidarity became completely, emotionally overwhelming. In those moments, looking through the viewfinder, a profound shift happened inside me. I felt proud; in those moments, we were all Minnesotans, no matter how far away we currently stood from the physical epicenter. We were bound to the same dirt, the same fight.

I remember saying, How many times are we going to say “Wake Up” before people actually “Wake The Fuck Up”? We were woke before “woke” became hijacked by the Maga Republicans. Everyone was aware, that’s what it means to be woke: awareness, education beyond the classrooms about the socio-economic conditions of marginalized people throughout history.

When the news came that the third precinct in Minneapolis was burning—when the images of people taking it to the streets and sticking it to the man 🤭, watching the smoke and shattered glass fill the airwaves. I felt a desperate pull to hop on a plane and put myself right on that front line. People were burning things out because they felt completely burned out by the system. A system that is structurally predatory when it comes to the killing of people. A system of bloodsport where officers are rewarded with stickers, buttons, patches, and carved notches on their belts for killing Black bodies with the worst kinds of violent actions. It was destructive, yes, but the destruction wasn’t the point, the point was the cry of an uncontained pain. A pain that started on the slave trading ports of Mama Africa during the Transatlantic slave trade centuries ago.

I didn’t condone the property burning, but inside, I understood it. I knew that if I had caught that flight, if I had joined in the melee, I would have had to look at myself in the mirror and say: I didn’t come here for this, and I don’t condone my actions—but Damnit, I understand. Because everyone affected by what they saw understood. Blacks, whites, Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics, Indians—heck, the entire world. Even in conflict places like the Congo, Palestine, and the Sudan, to developed nations such as Canada, China, Japan, Russia, and some Jews living in Israel.

Fast forward years later, and the coordinates of my life have shifted. I am no longer an outsider looking at a distant city through a digital display or wishing I could fly into the eye of the catastrophe. I reside here, walking the very streets I watched fracture from a thousand miles away.

May 25 is now officially observed annually as George Floyd Remembrance Day—a day first proclaimed by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in 2022 to honor Floyd’s life and serve as a global focal point for racial justice, equity, and civil rights. On Monday, I stepped out onto the pavement where the epicenter of that global movement rests: George Floyd Square, at the historic intersection of East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue.

Standing there brought back a specific memory from the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. Back in 2019, one of my absolute favorite sports podcasts was All the Smoke, hosted by Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes. It was a staple for me then, and though I don’t watch many sports podcasts anymore, I still catch an episode every now and then. It was incredibly shocking to learn after the murder that Stephen Jackson wasn't just a commentator on the culture, he was a very close, lifelong friend of George Floyd. Over the years, I’ve watched Jackson represent his friend with the kind of fierce, unyielding loyalty a true friend should carry. I didn’t see Stephen Jackson at the square on Monday, but I know that if he wasn't there, he had a valid reason, and that’s okay. He has taken on a lifelong mandate to ensure his friend’s name and memory will never be lost to history.

I was at the square to document that very preservation at the annual Rise & Remember Festival. I didn’t find a combative front line; I found a free, vibrant street celebration of Black lives, culture, and unity.

This time, I didn’t carry a wide lens meant to capture chaos or defensive lines. I chose an 85mm lens, shooting between f/4 and f/5.6. I didn’t want to shoot wide open at f/2 and completely melt the background into an abstract, meaningless blur; it was midday, the late-afternoon sun was pouring over the city, and I needed those background elements. The vendor tables stacked with histories of Pan-Africanism, the live music, the poets, the gleam of the brass horns, the community banners, they weren’t clutter. They were the context. They were the proof of survival.

With that lens, I wasn’t tracking friction. I was pulling focus onto individual sovereignty. I looked for the vendors, the attendees, the kids standing by the barricades, the disabled people moving through the crowd. I noticed the people who walked past me multiple times, watching my camera, wanting to be seen but hesitant to ask. I stepped into those spaces, broke the friction, introduced myself, and asked to take their portrait.

In Charlotte, the camera was a shield and a witness to a fracture. On Monday in Minneapolis, showing people their image on the back of my LCD screen and watching their faces light up with approval made the camera something else entirely. It became a bridge.

The defining truth of the day unfolded across the creative spaces built right into the pavement, where community support felt less like an abstract concept and more like an active currency.

I walked into a white vendor tent and found the interior walls adorned with incredible, vibrant paintings. The artist was a young lady—completely self-taught, having discovered her gift at just nine years old. As I stood in the shade of the canopy, amazed at her incredible artworks, I watched attendees engage with the brilliant displays of her prints.

As I spoke with her and her mother, one particular piece immediately caught my eye. It was still early in the day, so I told them I’d loop back a little later to buy it. By the time I returned, someone else had already purchased it. There was a brief flash of disappointment, but it instantly melted into a genuine sense of happiness, someone else had recognized her brilliance and valued her work.

As I turned my attention to another section of her display, admiring a collection of art meticulously painted onto the fabric of handbags, a young girl quietly entered the tent. She walked right up to the artist, pressed a single dollar bill into her hand, said, “This is for you,” and turned to leave. It was a random, beautiful act of pure, unprompted kindness.

Seeing that little girl’s philanthropic gesture hit me with a profound wave of joy. I couldn’t let that moment just pass by. I called her back into the tent, pointed to one of the framed painting handbags, and purchased it for her on the spot. She looked at it, caught off guard, and shyly asked if she could switch it for one of her own choosing.

The artist smiled. “Absolutely.”

Then I noticed her brother standing there, watching the exchange. I looked at him and felt that same joyful momentum. “Pick out the painting you like,” I told him. “Any one you want.” I selected another piece of art for myself, and right there in the shelter of that tent, the universe aligned into something entirely surreal. We gathered together, the young artist, her mother, the kids, and myself—holding up our newly acquired pieces, smiling into the lens as we documented the moment.

The collaborative energy of the street didn’t stop at the canvas; it spilled directly into literature just a few steps away. At a neighboring booth, a family team stood proudly behind a table showcasing their comic book series, Jalaya Origins: Before Strings & Sparks, a narrative dedicated entirely to supporting ADHD awareness.

The inspiration behind the comic stood right there at the table. Jalaya proudly held up two copies of the comic book for a photograph with her family wearing matching shirts reading “What’s Your Superpower?” The comic used her very likeness as the blueprint for a hero navigating the world with ADHD.

Looking at the collective frames of the afternoon, the entire journey came full circle. Years ago, from my livingroom in Charlotte NC, I had tasted the salt of a stranger’s death and watched a city burn from the inside out. But on Monday, under the Minneapolis sun at 38th and Chicago, I witnessed a community buying, creating, giving, and holding onto its beauty. We weren’t just surviving the trauma anymore; we were actively funding each other’s joy.

But as the sun dipped past the horizon, the vibrant energy of the daytime celebration yielded to a heavy, quiet gravity. The atmosphere shifted on a dime as the brass band began to play. Jubilant music cut through the fading warmth of the evening, accompanied by roaring chants of “This is what community looks like!” Fist-pumping, pride, and an electric excitement rippled through the crowd as we began marching down the street. It was a march fueled by joy, but anchored heavily in remembrance. Remembrance of a man who lost his life? No, that’s too passive. It was remembrance of a man whose life was literally, meticulously taken away. It was a slow, churning, public execution. And though the music was jubilant as we marched toward the memorial site, every single step was an homage to George Floyd and the countless others who have lost their lives at the hands of police officers in this country.

When we reached the site, I looked at the dip in the earth and asked someone if this was a basin.

“No,” they replied softly. “It used to be a pond.”

To my left, positioned at the top of the field that once held water, a live orchestra began to play. They performed selected pieces, I wasn’t entirely sure if they were sacred hymns or classical arrangements, but the music sounded absolutely magnificent, hanging in the twilight air.

As the orchestra played, people holding white candles were asked to walk down into the valley of what used to be the pond. Down in the basin, rows of symbolic white headstones rested in the grass, each bearing the name of an individual killed by police officers. The crowd filed down, and people began to couple off, one or two standing sentry next to each headstone with their small flames cutting through the deepening shadows.

I was down at the bottom of the basin, moving between the markers, my camera set wide open at f/2 to catch the raw, internal dialogue of an exhausted community. Through the viewfinder, the crowd became a mosaic of generational endurance. I captured a father sitting on the grass, arms wrapped protectively around his young daughter while his son held a flame nearby. I pulled focus onto individual faces illuminated only by wax and fire: a young woman standing with arms tightly crossed, her eyes tracking a distant, heavy thought; another staring forward with a piercing, solemn resolve; and an elder in a wide-brimmed hat whose direct gaze carried the unyielding weight of someone who has witnessed this cycle too many times.

There was warmth cutting through the dimness, too—two young girls sitting together on the earth, offering gentle, resilient smiles into the lens, holding their small lights like promises. Nearby, a woman stood holding a handmade cardboard sign of a burning candle with George Floyd’s name written in stark, simple markers. Earlier in the day, I had photographed a man proudly holding a complex, framed painting depicting the burning streets and historical figures gathered around a table beneath Floyd’s gaze, a macro-epic of the friction. But here in the grass, the epic fractured into the quietest elements of human sorrow.

And then, I looked to my right.

Sitting on the grass, looking down at the bottom of the field where the headstones sat, was George Floyd’s uncle and his young son.

The look on his uncle’s face hit me like a ton of bricks. It completely destroyed me. Earlier in the day, the atmosphere had been lighter; I had purchased a T-shirt featuring George’s face from his family and shared a warm photo with him. But now, in the quiet dim of the vigil, the sheer defense of the day fell away. Even with his young son sitting right by his side, this man carried a look of absolute, bottomless emptiness.

Seeing him like that broke me. A violent flashback hit my chest, the walls of the field vanished, and suddenly I was right back in my living room in Charlotte, staring at my MacBook screen, watching his nephew’s murder loop over and over again. The hot, heavy salt of that original trauma rushed back into my throat. I fought with every ounce of my willpower to stay composed, blinking back tears to keep my vision clear because my shutter was clicking. I refused to let my own grief become a distraction from what was happening in front of me. I had to hold the camera steady. I had to lock the focus.

And that, right there, is exactly why I love what I do.

I don’t carry this camera to capture abstract art or pretty aesthetics. I carry it because I get to capture these irreplaceable moments of unvarnished human truth. I get to share them. I have an absolute obligation to tell these stories, because it is vital that the faces of these people are seen, that their pain is heard, and that their loved ones are permanently remembered.

The terrifying reality of the system we live under is that this can happen to any single one of us. It can happen to any one of our family members in the blink of an eye. I don’t show up to these spaces because I am looking for support for myself. I show up and I show support because when the system tries to erase a person’s humanity, the lens is the only thing left that can etch their soul into history. We fund the joy, yes, but we carry the bodies—and as long as we carry them, I will be there to document the weight.

By removing the physical object, the reminder of the achievement is functionally diminished, allowing the perpetrator to forcefully shift the interpersonal focus back onto themselves.

Diagnostic Risk Assessment: Structural Breakdown and Danger Signs

When a perpetrator overrides basic societal inhibitions to destroy an ecosystem of gear, such as cameras, lenses, lights, audio equipment, or professional tools—the clinical risk profile shifts exponentially. This behavior highlights four critical clinical markers:

They are fully aware of the hard work, financial investment, and emotional soul poured into that equipment. The victim is no longer viewed as a human being with rights and feelings; they are a target to be neutralized.

The Risk of Escalation and the "Extinction Burst": This behavior rarely occurs in a vacuum; it typically manifests when the perpetrator perceives a critical loss of control, or when the victim begins to succeed and build an independent life outside of their influence. If the perpetrator realizes that destroying physical items failed to force the victim into emotional submission, or if the victim begins to hold them legally accountable (such as filing a law enforcement report), they may experience what behavioral psychology terms an extinction burst, a massive, desperate, and highly unpredictable spike in aggressive behavior to regain dominance. It began as a mechanical checklist as I stood in the hallway outside of my apartment door. I stopped to turn on my headphones.

"Connected."

Almost immediately, I snapped my fingers in mid-air as a sudden realization struck me before I could take a forwarding step: my phone. I opened the door, and one of my roommates—the Kenyan, who was in the kitchen making pancakes—looked at me and said, “Oh, you forgot your phone.”

Without hesitation, I responded, “No I didn’t forget, I remembered well enough that I came back to get it.

That slight friction set the theme for a day defined by daunting, calculated deviations. Instead of my usual route, I was in exploratory mode, set to traverse the grid of the Twin Cities’ transit system. I hopped on the Green Line, rode the rails down to West Bank Station, and transferred to the number 7 bus, riding it down to the commercial hub on Minnehaha Avenue. The steadiness and familiarity there was grounded, physical, and mundane: a heavy leg-day session at Planet Fitness, a quick transit through the consumer orbit of Target and Raising Cane’s to release the lactic acid buildup from a brutal workout, and a final stop at Cub Foods to gather twenty-five dollars worth of groceries.

While carrying those heavy bags back, I decided to break from the norm of my return.

I reached 26th Avenue and couldn’t decide which direction I wanted to go. Seeing a gentleman exiting a gas station, I asked him if there was a shorter way to my destination in Saint Paul. He replied that there most certainly was.

“Two blocks away, past the freeway overpass, is Franklin Avenue," he said. "Turn left onto Franklin Avenue and go over the bridge. There is also a bus that travels along that route.”

"Fantastic. Thank you, kind sir."

The gentleman crossed the street, and I chose to make a right turn instead of a left, actively steering clear of the looming, sterile medical complex of the University of Minnesota Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital. I wanted a different path through the city. Along the way, I found myself walking gingerly with a sort of knowingness. Having just been given directions, I began thinking of a book I read many years ago, Slouching Towards Kalamazoo by Peter De Vries. Toying with the title, I dubbed my own adventure “Slouching My Way Towards Saint Paul, Minnesota.”

The detour immediately rewarded me with a pocket of surreal, storybook eccentricity. Tucked behind a living green fence of arborvitae and cedar trees, I stumbled upon a house flanked by stone pillars. Perched along the wall was a bizarre, brilliant lineup of painted bronze Humpty Dumpty statues. Each egg possessed its own completely distinct, highly expressive character, looking for all the world like a theatrical lineup of Shakespearean actors—or perhaps a surreal twist on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In this case, the Seven Humpty Dumptys.

I stood there on the pavement, introducing myself to the main characters of the Mother Goose Cinematic Universe:

The Pragmatist: Wearing a classic red top hat and a polka-dot bow tie, shrug-posing with his hands out as if to say, “Hey, gravity happens.”

The Visionary: A brilliant twist where he cradles a globe painted to look like a stitched baseball. He looks smug, like he just threw a perfect curveball to the cosmos.

The Academic: Sitting cross-legged in a vibrant pink jacket, casually holding an open book and looking up as if he just read a particularly profound piece of poetry.

The Skeptic: Pure gold. A deep scowl, a finger pressed to the chin, a mismatched collar—he looks entirely unimpressed by whatever reality you just presented to him.

The Virtuoso: Playfully serenading the passing sidewalk traffic on 26th Avenue with a tiny bronze violin.

The Aristocrat: Complete with a white powdered wig, a monocle, and a pocket watch, looking down his nose with supreme royal judgment.

The Optimist: Hands planted firmly on his hips, sporting a brilliant green polka-dot bow tie, completely content to sit on his wall without a care in the world.

While staring at the marvel of these figures, the dark, historical origin of the nursery rhyme flashed through my mind. In 15th-century England, “humpty dumpty” was common slang for a short, clumsy, or heavy-set person. King Richard III had severe scoliosis, giving him a hunched appearance that political enemies frequently mocked. At the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, Richard’s horse (allegedly named “Wall”) was killed or lost its footing. The king fell into the mud, where he was surrounded by enemy soldiers, brutally bludgeoned to death, and his body mutilated. His loyal men (“all the king’s men”) were completely unable to save his life or prevent his empire from shattering. Hence the nursery rhyme: “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again.”

Lost in this juxtaposition of childhood memory and medieval violence, I lingered to capture photos and videos, fascinated by this sudden burst of joyful, human creativity hidden in the quaintness of a storied neighborhood.

Then, I turned. Just a few feet away, I stepped onto the grand concrete arches of the Franklin Avenue Bridge. The newness of my surroundings was exciting, but little did I know that once I began to trek across, a haunting, towering spectre would strip away any illusions of escape.

Walking along the right-side pedestrian path, my thoughts drifted south to Charlotte, North Carolina, to a beautiful and amazing lady, Andriea. She has an absolute, paralyzing phobia of driving over bridges. Looking down over the concrete railing into the massive, sweeping trench of the Mississippi River gorge, I contemplated the sheer weight of that phobia. Far below, tiny kayakers paddled fiercely upstream against the calm current.

I thought about the videos showcasing the many bridges in close proximity to one another that I plan to create for my documentation during my stay in the Twin Cities. I wondered how that vertigo would mutate if the horizontal span of the bridge beneath me weren’t flat at all, but were instead tilted ninety degrees vertically. What if the bridge itself became the Tower of the Eye of Sauron—the fortress and seat of power of the Dark Lord in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings? The Great Eye, or the Lidless Eye, represents Sauron’s quasi-omniscient gaze, acting as a visual manifestation of his surveillance over Middle-earth and his intent to reclaim the One Ring. The Eye is largely metaphorical; it represents Sauron’s consciousness, and his malevolent will is felt across the land. Yet, Sauron himself has a tangible, physical body inside the tower, and he uses a Palantír (seeing-stone) to spy on his enemies. It is an unyielding, vertical pillar suspended straight up over the void, forcing you to stare at its eye from all angles.

And as if summoned by the thought of an inescapable vertical precipice, I looked to my left.

There it was.

Looming over the treeline, cutting through the river mist like a pristine monument—one befitting a larger-than-life statue of WWE's Stone Cold Steve Austin and his anti-authority persona—stood the authoritarian megalith dubbed Eleven on the River. Standing at 42 stories and 550 feet tall, it is the 7th-tallest building in the Minneapolis skyline, the tallest residential building in the city constructed since 1992, and the tallest residential building in the upper Midwest.

Well, dang. I can’t escape this darn tower no matter where I go. I searched my Amazon Music library to find Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me,” chuckling as the song played, singing aloud and weaving "The Eye of Sauron follows me" into the lyrics.

Eleven on the River is the ultimate urban Panopticon. In classic architectural theory, Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon describes a circular prison design centered around a single, dominant watchtower. The brilliance—and the cruelty—of the design relies on a visual asymmetry: the occupants in the surrounding cells can never see past the tower’s darkened windows. Because they never know exactly when they are being watched, they must assume they are being watched at all times. They internalize the gaze of the tower, policing their own movements and transforming their own minds into the guardhouse.

Eleven achieves this exact psychological dominance over the West Bank, the East Bank, and the wider University of Minnesota campus. The university prides itself on its open, sprawling layouts—its green courtyards, its wide avenues, and the exposed plazas between adjacent buildings. But this very openness renders it entirely vulnerable to the tower’s peak. Because Eleven sits isolated on the riverbend, completely detached from the crowded cluster of the downtown core, it commands an unshielded, 360-degree visual dominion over the flats.

You can try to play a game of evasion. You can duck into a narrow alley behind a hotel, a house, or a business. You can try to lose yourself in a small, historic neighborhood, or stand in the shadow of a weathered, brutalist concrete grain elevator. You can be walking on the asphalt or across green spaces, sharing human moments like correcting local youths on their basketball shooting form, feeling entirely secluded from the world.

But the moment you walk past a brick corner or look up through a crease between offset buildings, that towering stone monolith instantly reappears in the negative space. It watches the backspaces of the city. Its eyes are fixed on the courtyards. It turns the entire urban landscape into The Grid. In the TRON trilogy, the Grid is a virtual landscape where computer programs reside and participate in gladiator-style games.

Up close, Eleven's physical anatomy only reinforces this looming sense of tactical surveillance. It does not look like a standard residential high-rise; it looks like an above-ground, heavily beefed-up military bunker disguised as a luxury tower. Structurally, it is an unyielding monolith of post-tensioned reinforced concrete, built to withstand the immense, shearing wind loads of the river gorge. The heavy concrete mass completely seals out the ambient noise of the city, the roaring river traffic, and the wind, this building has active noise cancelling. Its brilliant white armor is composed of massive, custom-fabricated precast architectural concrete panels mixed with limestone aggregate, acid-washed to a matte finish that looks like hand-carved stone.

Every design choice feels deliberately fortified. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows are deeply recessed into the heavy precast frames, functioning exactly like a fortress embolium or a bunker embrasure. From the ground, these deep shadows completely mask the interior, creating perfect concealment for high-tech surveillance cameras, tracking software, or high-powered telescopes. The balconies are not flimsy glass sheets; they are enclosed by solid, heavy precast concrete balustrades. They provide substantial physical cover and concealment—a series of high-altitude sniper fortifications stacked forty-two stories into the sky, offering a stable, unassailable platform with a commanding line of sight over miles of territory.

As I completed my walk across the Franklin Bridge, the heavy grocery bags pulling at my arms, I realized the true power of the tower isn’t that someone is actively watching through a lens. It is the fact that its geometry makes observation a permanent, structural certainty. No matter how many right turns I take, no matter how deeply I cut through the neighborhood veins of Minneapolis or Saint Paul, the Eye of Eleven on the River remains anchored to the horizon—an inescapable white sentinel tracking my progression as I go about my outings, documenting and living, loving life, and enjoying my brief stay in the Twin Cities.

While official police hiring manuals speak in the sterile tongue of "merit" and "business necessity," the actual gatekeeping occurs through a system of Calculated Ambiguity. This is the domain of the unwritten rule, where "professionalism" is a code for cultural assimilation and "discretion" is a license for exclusion. When we analyze the previous failure of departments, from the Twin Cities to Nassau County, to meet the federal 80% Rule (the EEOC's threshold for determining adverse impact), we are witnessing the deliberate engineering of an institutional vacuum.

This vacuum is not merely an absence of color; it is a space of Co-opted Psychology. The "Architecture of the Vacancy" begins not at the hiring desk, but in the sterile, high-stress environment of the academy. This tactical silence effectively suppresses the Matriarchal Dynamic, a psychological rearing rooted in nurture, empathy, and protection which stands as the polar opposite of the predominantly white, patriarchal "Warrior" model. While some white officers and their proxies align with their Black counterparts in a spirit of solidarity and communal care, the overarching system is designed to reward dominance over empathy.

I. The Architecture of the Vacancy: The 80% Rule as a Smoke Detector

The 80% Rule states that a selection rate for any race, sex, or ethnic group which is less than four-fifths (80%) of the rate for the group with the highest rate will generally be regarded by Federal enforcement agencies as evidence of adverse impact. In the context of New York City, Los Angeles, the Twin Cities, and Philadelphia, this rule acts as a statistical smoke detector for “Calculated Ambiguity”.

If not audited through Local Validation Studies, these tools recreate “Ghost Skin” filters by coding Black cultural expressions as “low in empathy” or “aggressive,” effectively hiding bias within a digital black box. This represents the evolution of Calculated Ambiguity into a technological cage, where the "Digital Ghost" automates the exclusion previously handled by human gatekeepers.

II. The Colonial Proxy & The Gang Mentality

When a department lacks the internal Equipollence of a sovereign Black contingent, a "Colonial Proxy" psychology takes root. In practice, Equipollence is more than numerical parity; it is the existence of a "Parallel Authority Structure", an independent, legally empowered oversight body comprised of the community’s "Internal Witnesses" who possess the power to veto discretionary hiring decisions and audit disciplinary records. Non-Black minority officers are often forced into an ideological trade-off: adopt the "Warrior" subculture or face professional isolation. The "nod and wink" culture does not merely recruit; it hollows out.

For the Asian American officer, the trade-off is often a desperate performance of the "model officer", a rigid adherence to state-sanctioned professionalism designed to preemptively neutralize the "Ghost Skin" perception of the "docile" outsider. In New York, the tragedy of Peter Liang stands as a monument to this vacuum; a rookie officer on a "vertical patrol" who, in his haste to perform the "Warrior" role in the dark of a housing project, became the instrument of an institutional violence that offered him no protection in return. This is the "eighty-sixing" of cultural nuance, where the officer is incentivized to adopt the aggressive posture of the dominant group to avoid being seen as "unfit" for the uniform.

The "Colonial Proxy" is solidified during the Field Training phase, a period spanning six to eighteen months that acts as the "Fitting In" threshold. Here, the "high-stakes gang" structure exerts its maximum pressure. If a rookie officer is paired with a "Ghost Skin" influencer, they are groomed to adopt the predatory optics of the dominant group as a mechanical necessity. To remain an "Internal Witness" during this phase is to risk professional "eighty-sixing", a social and tactical isolation that leaves the officer "outmanned and outgunned" in the very fortress they were told they belonged to.

I went to the theater on an unseasonably warm midday Tuesday in December because I was bored. Also, movie tickets, food items (specialty items), and drinks were only five dollars, including parking validation. While in line, I was approached by a woman with curly hair.

”What movie are you seeing today?"

"Doctor Strange, but then again I might wait for the weekend and just grab a bite to eat instead. What movie are you here to see?"

"Well, I saw you and I liked the way you looked and thought I would come over to make your acquaintance."

She was striking. a radiant, deep-ebony presence with braces and a great-looking physique. She wore a tight hoodie with the midriff missing, showing her flat, ripped tummy, black skinny jeans, and a pair of black ankle booties. No mascara, just some cherry-flavored lip balm on her pretty lips, which smelled absolutely delicious. She looked like a former collegiate track star still in peak form.

"Wow, you're gorgeous. What is your name?"

"Kibera, and yours?"

Grabbing her right hand, I bowed and kissed it. "I’m Neil. Neil Hadyn Nicholson, 007 at your service."

She laughed, hugged me, and leaped up into my arms, wrapping her strong legs around my waist.

"My, my, my, aren't you excited?" I said.

"Yes, I am, and it's very nice to meet me."

I told her that the pleasure was most definitely all mine.

We decided not to see a movie and had lunch together instead. We sat for close to four hours talking and laughing. As it turned out, we had a lot in common. We both loved working out, dancing, eating good food, dressing fly, and basketball. Oh, and the best part, though! We were both identical twins. She was also a member of the city's professional basketball dance team and worked full-time as a bank teller. I told her I worked for a commercial printing company and was also a graphic designer and photographer.

We had such a great lunch together we decided to take a walk around the city afterward and enjoy the holiday decorations. Weeks went by and we kept getting closer emotionally. The physical attraction was there from the jump, and we had delightful conversations about the volatile, searing friction between us, it was visceral—but we did not want to move too quickly. We agreed not to visit each other in a setting where things might get hot and heavy. We were trying to build something sustainable that could potentially develop into something very hard to break away from.

Before we met, I had planned a vacation to my home island of Grenada, West Indies. It was my third straight trip in three years. I'd be gone ten days, returning five days before the Christmas holiday, just enough time to buy and decorate a tree and do some shopping. My idea of shopping is buying gift cards and top-shelf liquor. For her, though, I brought back amazing, rare black diamond stud earrings. She was shocked and equally surprised. She felt uncomfortable at first, but I told her not to feel that way; I wanted to give her something to show just how incredible she makes me feel. Reluctantly, she took them and then began crying.

Kibera couldn't stop shaking as I held her close, wrapping her in warmth and genuine, unconditional love.

And I did. I wish I had met her a lot sooner, because she would have been the perfect travel companion on this latest trip.

The agents and their perps were watching us as we grew closer. At my job, there was a woman working there who had eyes for me but never said anything. She was very pretty and an excellent coworker. She was also from another country and had a three-year work visa. After her assignment expired, she would have to return home. She had one year left and was dreading the thought of going back. We had a very good working relationship and had made plans several times to hang out with other coworkers, but something always seemed to come up, delaying our fun times.

I had been single for quite some time, and I was beginning to miss having a best friend, girl, and lover—my partner in crime, my ace boon coon, my ride-or-die, and my dog for life to traverse through this world with and share in love (peace and hair grease, lol), I mean, love and happiness.

But when you are a targeted individual, the landscape of human connection becomes treacherous. One of the primary objectives is to ensure your total sequestration—to keep you atomized and isolated. Another is to coerce you into a relationship with a handpicked operative who will monitor and transmit your every word and action back to their handlers. As long as you yield to the mind-fuck, the humiliation, and the psychological attrition, she remains the instrument of your confinement.

The moment you forge a connection on your own, one outside their surveillance architecture—it is treated as a breach of national security. Why do they demand total jurisdiction over every facet of your existence? It is purely about hegemony. They need to manipulate the narrative of the bond to ensure it disintegrates with maximum velocity, regardless of the depth of your affection. It's how they keep you emotionally unbalanced. Very soon, you will find yourself wanting to be by yourself. "Let us or love yourself." "No him, no here." "No him, no us." "No him, no happy life." "No us, no living in luxury." "Leave us: no sex, no children, no witnesses, no investigation, no support." You will see and hear that repeatedly and frequently in subliminal messages and silent sound artificial telepathy (thought-based) technology transmission. It's incredibly disturbing how they literally cheated me out of what could have been two college degrees and then prevented me from gaining one in another field by attempting to extort money from me through the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division and then through Sallie Mae.

Meeting this beautiful person threw a monkey wrench in their sick game of Monopoly. Her personality matched mine: fun, funny, loving, smart, no-nonsense, and sexually expressive and passionate. We went to dinners, games, dancing, and family events; we were truly becoming an item. I went on vacation and came back two days early because I was missing her something terrible.

I went tree shopping; she came over and helped me decorate it. It was a great thing to share, another fantastic memory created for eternity. We also spent our first night together and it was out of this world—a mind-blowing experience. Two days later, I went out to purchase some gift cards. Upon my return home, I grabbed a cup of eggnog and some gingerbread cookies and put on The Grinch Who Stole Holiday for a movie night.

I had called Kibera on my way home and invited her, but she and her twin sister were out shopping as well and she would not be able to come through. Things were going great, but then, as I pressed the power button on my home entertainment system, the little light did not come on, and neither did the welcome loading message. It was working fine before I left for my vacation. I had owned the system for less than a year; there is no way this thing has gone bad on me. "No way in hell," I said, shaking my head. I turned on my Mac Pro thinking, well, at least I can watch it here, but there was no sound coming out of my two-month-old Harman Kardon Bluetooth SoundSticks. They had also gone bad. The fuck, I thought. The "Wreck-it Ralphs" had struck again.

Harman Kardon replaced my speakers, but a few weeks later, the sound disappeared again. Indignation began to fester, and I said, "Fuck it." I packed the speakers back in their box and used it as a stand for my table lamp. I explained to Kibera what was happening, as I did not hear from her for a few days—actually, it was a day and a half, at least that's what I thought until I realized I did not check my text messages.

She texted me saying she kept running into a lot of music entertainment stars and was also receiving many invites to the homes of professional basketball players for gatherings, and invitations to games by professional football athletes and management employees. I thought nothing strange about it because, after all, that's just the social club climate when you're in that space.

Kibera said it was strange, though, because not many players on the team had ever invited her to any low-key functions before, nor had players from the football teams ever sent her tickets to their games. She had been to a few private parties, mostly team-centered events, however this was like a very frequent thing all of a sudden. Also, she was leery because she had met one of my favorite New York rappers who was performing at a venue the coming weekend—the one I had been talking about and had bought a few CDs for her to listen to a month ago. I was also about to tell her I copped a few tickets to the concert before she said she just happened to have met him while shopping at South Park Mall.

Hmm, I thought to myself. "See, they started sending stars to ruin the relationship.”

The mall encounter wasn’t a coincidence; it was a precise synchronization. While the ‘Wreck-it Ralphs’ were physically dismantling my environment, incinerating the circuits of my sound system—they were simultaneously launching a clandestine, neuro-invasive campaign. This is the Psychic Driving technique in its most feral form. The technology begins to broadcast a manufactured reality, using artificial telepathy to whisper that our connection was volatile and expendable. This is where the game turns from hardware to software. From the living room to the mind.

As Kibera told me about meeting the rapper, I felt the first wave of the "Silent Sound" transmissions. Through these subliminal streams, they started trying to broadcast directives on how to "lock her down." They provide a tactical roadmap of control, urging me to become the very thing I despise: a manipulator. They want to see if they can subvert my personal mandate of dignity by tricking me into acting out of fear and possession.

They want me to move from a place of "knowing the truth" to a place of "believing" their lies.

The goal is a perpetual feedback loop of emotional instability. They want to see if they can steer the relationship into the ground by making me the pilot of its destruction, and to observe if they can subvert my personal mandate of dignity by tricking me into acting out of paranoia. But I recognize the frequency. I detect the sabotage before it cripples the mechanism. I saw the monkey wrench before it hits the gears.

The agents and their perps think they are running a routine experiment, but they forget one thing: I am still Neil Hadyn Nicholson. And 007 doesn’t take orders from the enemy.
